Postnatal Garlic Chutney: A Nourishing Recipe for Postnatal Care

Postnatal Garlic Chutney is a simple, flavourful and nourishing accompaniment that can be enjoyed as part of a balanced meal during the postnatal period, especially the first 3-7 days. Made with garlic, coconut, warming spices and sesame oil, this chutney adds flavour to everyday meals while bringing together wholesome ingredients traditionally used in Indian cooking while helping to improve uterine emptying and restoration.

Garlic is a versatile ingredient commonly used in traditional cuisines, while coconut adds a naturally rich texture and flavour. Warming spices and sesame oil complement the chutney and make it a comforting addition to a nourishing meal.

Traditionally, rice porridge with Garlic chutney is the first few meals served to the new mom followed by serving garlic chutney with rice for lunch or with Dosa or Idli or something similar for breakfast for another few days. This simple chutney can be enjoyed with rice, roti, dosa, idli or other suitable meals. The spice level can also be adjusted according to individual preference, making it easy to include as part of a personalised postnatal diet.

Now, let’s dive into the easy preparation of this nourishing Postnatal Garlic Chutney.

Ingredients

Garlic – 6 medium sized cloves, peeled

Grated Coconut – ½ cup

Dried Red Chillies (optional) – 3–5, adjusted to taste

Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp

Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp

Tamarind – 1 tsp, or as required

Sesame Oil – 1–2 teaspoon

Curry Leaves – a few sprigs

Salt – as required

Water – as required

Preparation

  1. First we need to dry roast the dry ingredients including garlic (except for mustard seeds) and make into a paste. For that, heat a pan over low to medium heat. Add the garlic cloves and gently roast them until they become lightly golden and aromatic.
  2. Add the grated coconut and dried red chillies to the pan. Roast gently for a few minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Add the cumin seeds and continue roasting for another minute until the spices become fragrant. Turn off the heat and allow the ingredients to cool.
  4. Transfer the roasted garlic, coconut, dried red chillies and cumin seeds to a blender or food processor. Add tamarind and salt.
  5. Add a small amount of water and blend until you achieve a coarse or smooth consistency, depending on your preference.
  6. Now let’s make the chutney after tempering (tadka), Heat sesame oil in a small pan. Add the mustard seeds and allow them to crackle. Add the curry leaves and gently sauté for a few seconds.
  7. Pour the tempering over the prepared chutney and mix well.
  8. Serve the Postnatal Garlic Chutney fresh alongside a warm, nourishing meal.

Things to Remember

  1. You can adjust the number of dried red chillies according to your preferred spice level. For a milder chutney, reduce the chillies or leave them out.
  2. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a little more water while blending. For a thicker chutney, use less water.
  3. Fresh coconut can be used instead of grated coconut. If using fresh coconut, roast it gently until lightly golden to enhance its flavour.
  4. The amount of tamarind can be adjusted according to taste. You can reduce it if you prefer a less tangy chutney.
  5. This chutney can be served with steamed rice, roti, dosa, idli, or other suitable meals.
  6. For a milder and more nourishing meal, pair the chutney with warm rice and a simple vegetable dish or dal.
  7. Postnatal dietary needs can vary from person to person. Ingredients and spices should be adjusted according to individual preferences, dietary requirements, and professional guidance.
  8. If you are following a personalised postnatal diet plan, consult your Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare professional regarding the foods and ingredients that are best suited to your individual needs.
