Postnatal Lamb Shank Soup: A Nourishing Recipe for Postnatal Care
Lamb Shank Soup is a warm, hearty and nourishing dish that can be enjoyed as part of a balanced postnatal diet. Slow-cooked lamb shank combined with vegetables, herbs and gentle spices creates a comforting soup that is ideal for a wholesome meal.
Lamb provides a source of protein and essential nutrients, while vegetables add flavour, fibre and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Slow cooking allows the ingredients to become tender and creates a rich, flavourful broth that can be enjoyed warm.
This comforting soup can be adapted according to individual dietary needs and preferences. It can be served on its own or alongside a piece of good quality bread, couscous, quinoa or other suitable foods for a nourishing and satisfying meal.
Now, let’s dive into the easy preparation of this nourishing Postnatal Lamb Shank Soup.
Ingredients
Lamb Shanks – 2
Onion – 1 medium, chopped, optional but highly recommended. Can be replaced with 4-5 shallots.
Carrot – 2, chopped, optional
Celery – 1–2 stalks, chopped, optional
Garlic – 3–4 cloves, chopped, optional
Ginger – 1 tbsp, finely chopped
Tomato – 1 medium, chopped, optional
Cumin Powder – ½ tsp
Black Pepper – ½ tsp, or as required. Optional, but highly recommended.
Bay Leaf – 1
Fresh Coriander leave– a few sprigs, chopped
Salt – as required
Ghee or Olive Oil – 1 tbsp
Water or Stock – approximately 5–6 cups
Preparation
- Heat ghee or oil in a large pot (ideally pressure cooker or multi cooker) over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic and ginger. Sauté gently until the onion becomes soft and aromatic.
- Add the chopped carrots, celery and potato. Stir well and cook for a few minutes.
- Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, black pepper and salt. Mix well to coat the vegetables with the spices.
- Add the lamb shanks to the pot, stir well to coat with spices and add enough water or stock to cover the ingredients.
- Add the bay leaf and bring the soup to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat, cover the pot and allow the soup to simmer slowly for approximately 2–3 hours, or until the lamb becomes tender and easily separates from the bone.
- Remove the lamb shanks and carefully take the meat off the bones. Return the meat to the soup and remove the bones.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning as required. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
- Garnish with freshly chopped coriander and serve warm.
Things to Remember
- Slow cooking is recommended for this soup as it allows the lamb to become tender and helps develop a rich flavour.
- You can add seasonal vegetables such as pumpkin, sweet potato, beans or spinach according to your preference.
- The amount of spices can be adjusted according to individual taste and tolerance.
- For a lighter soup, skim off excess fat from the surface before serving.
- The soup can be prepared in advance and gently reheated before serving.
- If you prefer a thicker and more substantial meal, add additional vegetables or serve the soup with rice or another suitable accompaniment.
- Use fresh ingredients and adjust the seasoning according to your dietary requirements.
- Postnatal dietary needs can vary from person to person. Consider your individual health, dietary requirements and professional guidance when including specific foods in your postnatal diet.
